The split system concept

In earlier times, air conditioners were very simple appliances where all the electrical, mechanical, and chemical components were contained in a single unit. In residential homes, these units were typically installed in a window, since this was the easiest and cheapest way to install them.

How a split system air conditioner works

First, the compressor actually does the job of compressing the refrigerant, which increases the pressure of it. The condenser is like a big heat sink and helps make the refrigerant get colder. An expansion valve normalizes pressure to prevent the system from becoming over-pressurized.

Cold refrigerant can be passed to the indoor unit via the tubing which connects the two units together. The most common type of tubing used is copper pipe covered by a plastic insulator. Copper is chosen for its thermal efficiency.

The indoor unit contains an evaporator coil, an air filter, a fan, a drain pipe, and louvres. Refrigerant flows through the evaporator coil, cooling the air around the coil rapidly. The newly cooled air is expelled from the indoor unit by the fan. The louvres control the air flow, though they don’t actually perform any cooling function themselves.

The drain pipe is to allow condensation to drain out of the unit. When air cools, the water vapour in the air returns to liquid form, and it must be removed. This is partly how air conditioners help to reduce the humidity of the air.
